DSD Business Systems Hosts Japanese Student Tour Group on New Year’s Eve
On the last day of 2024, DSD had the unique opportunity to welcome a group of 29 Japanese students to our offices, showcasing our commitment to fostering technology understanding and STEM interest in future generations. This visit, organized by Fun Opportunities Abroad, was part of a cultural exchange program that brings Japanese students to California for immersive experiences in American culture.
While their English is limited, we had a fun time filling out a spreadsheet to demonstrate how Excel can create maps using data sets. The map here shows where the students are from by prefecture. A majority of the students are from the Tokyo region, which is not too surprising. However, there were students from all across Japan.
The students, hailing from various prefectures across Japan with a majority from the Tokyo region, were treated to a brief but impactful visit to DSD’s offices. Despite language barriers, our team engaged the students in an interactive demonstration of Excel’s data visualization capabilities, creating a map that displayed their home prefectures. This hands-on activity not only showcased practical applications of technology but also sparked curiosity about data analysis and its global implications.

The organization behind this visit, Fun Opportunities Abroad, plays a crucial role in facilitating these cultural exchanges. Their programs, ranging from 5 to 14 days, offer Japanese students the chance to stay with families in the Irvine area and visit various American cultural landmarks and businesses. This immersive approach helps broaden students’ horizons and fosters international understanding.

The visit concluded with the distribution of DSD merchandise, including towels and other convention swag, which the students eagerly collected. These mementos serve as tangible reminders of their experience and DSD’s commitment to education and cultural exchange. As the students departed for their next adventure, we at DSD were left with a renewed sense of purpose in our role as technology ambassadors to the world.
