Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Sage 100: Major Changes for 2023

Transport Layer Security for Sage 100

Like many of us, you may have never heard of TLS. However, it is important to understand that it may have serious ramifications on your ability to use Sage 100 in the future.

Read below for the specific conditions that include or exclude you from the affected group and what actions you must take as well as consequences if you don’t take the proper actions.

What is Transport Layer Security (TLS)

Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a third-party component that is widely adopted and designed to facilitate privacy and data security when communicating over the internet. TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 have been formally deprecated by the Internet Engineering Task Force since June 2018 and they are highly recommending usage of TLS 1.2.

How does this affect my Sage 100 or Sage 100 Payroll?

The Sage 100 licensing server will no longer support TLS 1.0 and 1.1 starting October 1, 2023, to meet the current recommendations and provide increased security.

Sage 100 will potentially go into read-only mode, which means that you will still be able to view and run reports for data that has been entered prior to that point, but you will NOT be able to enter any new data.

Below are the conditions which will cause Sage 100 to go into read-only mode. To avoid this, please schedule your upgrade to a current Sage 100 version prior to October 1, 2023.

1. On a subscription plan, including Sage 100c, Sage 100cloud, Sage 100 Payroll, and

2. Running Sage 100 version 2016 – version 2019 (see below for specific version information), and

3. Running Sage 100 on an operating system that does not support TLS 1.2. Workstations must be version 8.1 or higher and server must be Windows Server 2012 R2 or higher with required .NET components.

What actions do I need to take?

1. Determine what version of Sage 100 you are running. To identify what version of Sage 100 you are running, access Help from the menu bar and select About. The major release will be displayed.

If your version matches those listed below, you are affected and proceed to #3.

  • 5.30 (2016)
  • 5.40 (2017)
  • 6.00 (2018)
  • 6.10.0.0 – 6.10.3.0 (2019)
  • 6.20.0.0 (2020) Proceed to #2

If your version matches those listed below, you are NOT affected.

  • Versions 5.20 (2015) or prior
  • 6.10.4.0 or 6.10.5.0 (2019 specific product updates). This version is no longer supported by Sage and the recommendation is to upgrade to a current supported version.
  • 6.20.1.0 – 6.20.6.0 (2020 specific product updates)
  • 7.00 (2021)
  • 7.10 (2022)

2. If you are running 6.20.0.0 (2020 product update 0), contact your DSD Strategic Account Manager to schedule the installation of the current product update for version 2020.

3. Contact your DSD Strategic Account Manager to verify that your Sage 100 has a subscription license and discuss upgrading your Sage 100 to the current version of Sage 100. Don’t delay to ensure that your upgrade can be scheduled to be completed prior to October 1, 2023.

Sage Partner Cloud

Did you know that there is an option to move your Sage 100 to the cloud so that you no longer must have it installed on a server in your office? This is an option whether you are already running a current version of Sage 100 or will be upgrading to a current version based on the TLS changes.

If you are affected by the TLS 1.0 and 1.1 retirement on the Sage license server as indicated above, likely your current server will not meet the minimum requirements for the current versions of Sage 100 that you will be upgrading to.

Sage Partner Cloud (SPC) is a cloud hosting solution deployed in a Microsoft Azure environment. It provides these benefits.

  • Flexibility: Clients can access Sage 100 Standard from anywhere that has a solid internet connection.
  • Security: Sage customers can have confidence that their data is protected via Microsoft Azure security.
  • Cost effectiveness: Continue to use Sage 100 products in a cloud environment reducing training and business disruption cost.
  • Data backup: An automated backup policy is assigned that creates and retains 7 Daily, 5 Weekly, 3 Monthly, and 1 Annual backup.

See the DSD Sage Partner Cloud FAQ document and please contact your DSD Strategic Account Manager for pricing information.
